As a reference to the Japanese sport of sumo, the Sumo series celebrates the beauty of the torso, drawing inspiration from the traditional Japanese sport of sumo to design a pointed-footed base and a voluminous vase body.
All the vases have different mouth designs, from the traditional narrow vase opening to double openings and deeply carved pointed mouths.
The series focuses on the contrast between the familiar vase shape and the addition of more artistic, abstract ideas and details, refreshing our view of the vase form—more attentive to formal detail and abstract as art-object vessels, transcending our previous imagination of what a vase form could be.
The interior has a waterproof coating for displaying fresh flowers; the hand-glazed exterior gives the vase a unique matte texture, with each piece varying slightly in colour.
