Top Coat is a VOC-free, powdered, water-based product that is applied over a Kalkpaint surface to add a matte protective layer.The top coat is applied the same way as Kalkpaint, with x-strokes or up/down strokes depending on how you applied the Kalkpaint underneath. The ideal room temperature when applying the top coat is 15-25°C
The top coat is used to protect the wall from stains, spots, splashes and the like. The more layers you apply, the better the protection.
The contents of the bag mixed with 900 ml of water should give you about 1.2 liters of top coat in liquid form. The product should be mixed on the day of use and can only be stored in a sealed container. In liquid form it keeps for up to 14 days. In powder form, in a sealed container, the product keeps for up to 1 year. The top coat is milky white when mixed with water but turns transparent once dry (trust the process).
Please note: the top coat may slightly change the color of the kalkpaint, making it darker/warmer.
72 hours after applying the final coat of Kalkpaint, you can apply the first coat of top coat.
The second coat of top coat can be applied 6-8 hours after the first coat (depending on the humidity of the room).
For a third layer and between layers, please allow 24 hours.
Protection of the top coat:
Below you can see a water-resistance test carried out on different numbers of top coat layers. In the first photo on the left, water is sprayed on the Kalkpainted wall. The more layers of top coat, the better the protection provided.
One layer: one layer provides a degree of water resistance, but water can still penetrate. After applying one coat of top coat, you can clean the wall with a dry or slightly damp clean cloth to wipe off dust.Suitable for walls with lower protection requirements.
Two layers: two layers make the surface more water-resistant, and water will not easily penetrate. After applying two coats of top coat, you can clean the wall with a dry, wet or slightly damp clean cloth to wipe off dust and the like. Two coats are suitable for walls that need medium protection.
Three layers or more: To achieve a water-resistant surface that water no longer penetrates, at least three layers are needed, because the wall needs to be fully saturated with top coat. The top coat must fully cover the entire paint surface. After applying three layers or more, you can wipe/clean the wall with a clean damp cloth.*We recommend wiping the wall dry with a cloth after cleaning with a damp cloth, to avoid leaving streaks and water marks*.
When the wall needs a high degree of protection, at least three layers of application are appropriate.
The top coat is for indoor use only. It cannot withstand frost or extreme heat and is not suitable for permanently damp areas or places with heavy water use (such as indoor showers).
* Kalklitir cannot guarantee that the top coat will provide protection against all types of stains, scratches, chemicals, strong food coloring and the like. Our top coat is a VOC-free product with low/zero odor.
