You bought good pieces, so why does it still look off? Check these two lines
When you've bought good things and the room still looks wrong, the pieces are rarely the problem. The height lines aren't aligned, and there are too many different materials in play. Neither has anything to do with budget: a NT$30,000 set that gets this right will hold up better than a NT$300,000 set that gets it wrong.
Line one: the horizontal you see once you sit down
Eighty per cent of the time you spend looking at your living room, you're sitting down. And when you're seated, your eye automatically picks out a horizontal line, drawn together by the sofa seat, the coffee table top, the side table top and the top edge of the armrest. If those heights fight each other, the whole room feels subtly unsettled in a way that's hard to name.
There are only two rules worth following. Keep the coffee table 5 to 12 cm lower than the sofa seat, and keep the side table level with the armrest or the seat. The photo above is put together exactly that way: a modular sofa with a square coffee table only 30 cm high, so your eye travels over the table and lands on the curtains. That's what makes the room feel wide.

Take this table and measure what you already own. You don't need to replace anything yet — measure first. A surprising number of times, the problem is that the coffee table is taller than the sofa seat.
Line two: does each material appear a second time?
The second common issue is material overload. Wood, metal, stone, woven fibre, leather — each one counts. In a single living room, keep the main materials to three or fewer, and make sure each one shows up at least twice.
Appearing twice is the crucial part. If dark metal appears only on the coffee table base, your eye reads that table as an outsider. Let the same dark metal turn up once more on a side table, a lamp base or a door handle, and it becomes part of the room. The photo below demonstrates exactly that: a dark metal side table answering the dark floor, white upholstery answering the beige rug — only three materials in the frame, all echoing each other.
The reverse is also true. If you already own a piece you love but that never quite fits, you usually don't need to get rid of it. Find something small that repeats its material or colour once — a tray, a lampshade, a vase will do — and the piece gets absorbed into the room.
Measure before you buy
Before you order, measure the seat height and armrest height of the sofa you already have and note them in your phone. Compare those numbers directly when you're choosing a coffee table or side table; it's far more reliable than judging from photos.
