HKliving tableware under NT$2,000: how to read capacity, size and glaze variation

If you only have two thousand dollars left to spend on the dining table, put it into cups and bowls: the effect is far more visible than a new tablecloth or another ornament. HKliving's 70s ceramics mugs start at NT$592 and the Chef ceramics bowl is NT$420 — currently the lowest entry point into design tableware among NOSA's in-stock items.

Why tableware

There isn't actually much on a dining table that gets seen. The table itself usually can't be changed, and replacing the chairs means buying four at once. The things that genuinely get picked up every day and held right in front of your eyes are cups and bowls — and they cost the least. A set of four cups comes to under three thousand dollars, yet visually it changes the entire table.

It isn't hard to see why HKliving is affordable. It's Dutch volume-produced ceramics: licensed design plus large production runs, not studio craft. The hand-glazing is kept, but forming is done by machine, which is how the price stays down while no two pieces come out exactly alike.

Two things to settle before you choose

The first is capacity. The café mug holds 250 ml and the americano mug 270 ml; both are 8 cm tall, and the difference is the opening — 7.5 cm on the former, 8.5 cm on the latter. A pour-over comes to roughly 200 to 240 ml, which either mug takes, but if you usually add milk foam or drink iced americano, the 270 ml version gives you more room. The "big mug" people picture is usually 350 ml or more; neither of these is that size.

The second is glaze variation. 70s ceramics is hand-glazed, so even within the same colourway the glaze runs to different places and the speckling varies in density. Look at the white glaze dripping down in the photo — the angle of the drip is different on every single piece. People who like that irregularity consider it the whole point; people who want a perfectly matched set will consider it a problem. Work out which one you are before you buy.

The tray is the most underrated piece here

That NT$1,760 metal tray measures 35.5 x 24.5 cm, which is a little larger than most people expect. It's for more than carrying things. Put it in the middle of the dining table to corral the salt, the napkins and a candle, and the surface instantly has a visual centre; put it in the entryway for keys and it works just as well. It's only 3 cm thick, so when it isn't in use it stands on its edge beside a cabinet.

If you want to store the cups on a shelf, allow at least 12 cm between shelves. The mugs are 8 cm tall; the rest of that space is for your fingers to get in and lift them out.
